Directory of local services and amenities:
Moving into a home such as The Dales, does not mean you have to forego pleasures such as going to the pub, attending church for worship or simply walking to the shops etc, and we have therefore listed the local amenities below, as well as showing them on the attached map. All we would ask is that when you leave the home for whatever reason, you tell a member of staff where you are going and how long you expect to be away, so that if you fail to return in a reasonable time, we can initiate a search, start to look for you, and make enquiries as to your whereabouts.
Moving into The Dales does not mean you have to miss out on any of the local services and amenities dotted in and around the town of Maryport, and the local community of Ellenborough, so we have compiled this list to enable you to make the best use of them:
Many people think that by moving into care they have to give up using their existing Doctor, Dentist, Chiropodist etc, and lose touch with all that is happening outside the home, however this could not be further from the truth, and we would hope that moving into The Dales actually gives residents a new lease on life. Some Doctors decline to keep patients on their books if they move into another area quite some distance away from their surgery, so if you move into The Dales from another town other than Maryport or its outlying villages such as Flimby, Crosby, Broughton Moor etc, you may not be able to keep your existing Doctor, however some still do offer this service, so either ask them if they wish to retain you on their list, or alternatively we can contact them on your behalf. If they decline to continue to offer you their services, or if indeed you choose to change doctors, then we can help you with the process of registering with Maryport Health Services, or again, you may wish to contact them yourself, in which case the contact details are as follows.
Maryport Doctors contact details:
Maryport Health Services, Alneburgh House, Ewanrigg Road, Maryport, Cumbria CA15 8EL
Tel: 01900 815544 Fax: 01900 816626
Full details of the services provided and how to access them can be found at www.maryporthealthservices.co.uk
Incidentally, once you are registered with a local Doctor, or as soon as we have the details of your existing doctor, we would put all such information into our computerised records system. (See Document entitled ‘Protection and use of resident records’ for further details of how we keep such records and what we do with them).
If at any time you then ask to be seen by a doctor or the senior person on duty feels that you need to be seen by a Doctor, arrangements are made for this to happen. During the normal surgery opening hours, you may either be escorted down to the surgery, or we may request a GP to visit you in the home. You can of course contact your Doctor at any time you wish, without even informing us of this decision, just as if you were living in your own home in the community, and similarly you have the right to refuse to see a Doctor if you so wish. In a medical emergency however, the senior member of staff on duty would assess the situation and then either call the Cumbria Emergency Doctor On Call (CUEDOC) service, on 01228 401 999, or alternatively if the situation warranted it, place a call to the emergency services requesting an emergency ambulance.
A list of other Doctors in the area who may be able to offer their services is kept in the office and a copy of this may be requested at any time, but in any case these details are listed on the next page.
Many Opticians, Chiropodists (also known as Podiatrists) and Dentists continue to offer their services to clients who move home, but who can still attend their premises, and we are happy to assist you with this by, for instance, taking you there in our minibus. There may therefore, be no need for you to change your existing arrangements with these services and you can continue to use them as long as you and they are happy with the arrangements. That said there may be occasions where for whatever reason, you cannot attend their surgeries and need to be seen at The Dales, and whilst you are very welcome to ask your existing Optician, Chiropodist or Dentist etc to visit you at the home, if they cannot, then there are alternatives who will oblige, and whom we have used in the past, their contact details being shown below, and again you may either contact them directly or alternatively we can do this for you. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, and there may be many others who offer such services, however the ones listed below are the ones who we have contacted and who have confirmed that they are happy to offer their services to clients staying in our home. If you would like details of alternatives, then these can be found for you.
Please note,
it can be extremely difficult, if not impossible to access private dental care, and many local private dentists are not now adding new clients to their lists, so before you ask to be removed from your existing dentists list, please make sure that the dentist you intend to move to can actually take you.

Until recently the Post Office was located inside Village Stores along the other end of the village to The Dales but this recently closed dow. There ar currently no Post Office services within the village, however there is a small shop called Ellenborough Mini Market, located at the top of Church terrace, about 100 metres from the home.
Churches:
Ellenborough comes under the auspices of the Maryport and District team ministry, the Team Rector being Rev. Kevin Ellis who is also the Vicar at All Souls Church in Netherton, whilst Rev Graham Ransom is the minister for Ellenborough Methodist Chapel (see map for location of these churches). There are numerous other churches in town, and again the details of all of these can be obtained from the office during normal office hours. Where assistance is required to attend church, then this will be given, however we have forged good links with all of the local churches over the many years, and Holy Communion can therefore be taken within The Dales by prior arrangement or during one of our regular communion visits by the local clergy.
Transport:
We have fairly good transport links for such a rural area, hopefully making your journey to and from The Dales as trouble free as possible. We provide transportation to and from Doctor, Dentist, and Hospital visits etc using our minibus, and if you or your family and friends intend to visit The Dales by either train or bus, then we are more than happy to collect you or them from Maryport, and make the return journey to either the station or bus stop at the conclusion of the visit, however prior notice would be appreciated to ensure the minibus will be available at the time of your visit.
Trains:
There is a regular train service along the coastal route from Carlisle in the north to Barrow in the south of the county, this train stopping at numerous stations including Maryport, however some stops are made by requesting this of the ticket inspector/guard when alighting the train, so if you are getting on at Maryport, then do ask the guard if it automatically stops at your intended destination. Please note that there is also a train service from Carlisle to Barrow via Penrith and the Lake District, this being a completely different line. Please also note that there is a limited service running on the coastal line (with a stop at Maryport) at weekends.
Buses:
There is a bus service to and from Maryport that stops directly outside The Dales. Buses to Maryport normally pick up outside The Dales at twenty minutes to and twenty minutes past the hour, however these do seem to vary somewhat so do please check before planning your journey. From Maryport you can catch a bus to Workington and Whitehaven etc, or to Aspatria, Wigton, Carlisle etc. If going south the bus picks up from Curzon Street, mid way between the Waverly Hotel and the filling station/ Spar Shop, whilst going north (Carlisle) it picks up at about the same place but on the opposite side of the road. Please note that there is a limited service running at weekends. The provision of bus services in and around the Maryport area has changed recently, and there is now a direct service from Whitehaven that stops outside The Dales, however please check with the relevant bus companies for the most up to date information before setting out on your journey
